  1. Why can't I access my hosting control panel?

Scripts / CGI

  1. What is .htaccess?

.htaccess provides directory protection using an .htpasswd file. When in place, it restricts web and viewing access to authorised users or members.

  1. I keep getting an internal server error, what do I do?

If you are receiving a internal server error while trying to execute a cgi script, try checking some of the following items.

  1. I keep getting a cgi-wrapper error, what do I do?

If you are receiving a cgi-wrapper error it is usually because you have not set the path to a directory or file correctly. You should go back into your script and make sure that all the paths are correctly defined.

If you believe all paths to be correct and you've checked and double checked and it still gives you the error. Try clearing your browser cache and relaunching and reload the page. If that still doesn't work then find a source on the internet that can help you with common cgi problems.

  1. How/where do I execute my cgi scripts?

The server is setup to allow cgi's to be executed in any directory. It is a good idea that you use the ready made cgi-bin directory (/var/www/cgi-bin) and upload all your scripts to it.

  1. What is the path to sendmail on the server?

To retrieve your website's configuration information, click here.  The path to sendmail is /usr/sbin/sendmail

  1. What is the path to perl on the server?

To retrieve your website's configuration information, click here.  The path to perl on the server is /usr/bin/perl, this means that the top line of your perl/cgi scripts should be something like #!/usr/bin/perl

  1. What is the path to my directory on the server?

To retrieve your website's configuration information, click here.   You should save your websites html and other files you want to access from the web within the directory: /var/www/html

Uploading / Publish

  1. How do I change my custom error pages?

You can customise the look of an error page by creating or modifying the .php files within the /var/www/error_documents directory.  Make sure they are named 401.php, 403.php, 404.php or 500.php depending on the error page you wish to customise.

  1. When I upload my website, I still receive the default placeholder page.

Make sure you have uploaded to the correct /var/www/html folder.  If you have confirmed that your website was uploaded to the correct /var/www/html folder, then check to see if the default placeholder page (index.htm) is in place. If so, you need to either remove or overwrite it.

  1. Why would I receive a Forbidden message accessing my website?

If this occurs it is generally for one of the following 2 reasons:

  1. You don't have a properly named default page in your main /var/www/html directory. Acceptable file names are index.htm, index.html, default.html, index.shtml, index.cgi and index.php

  2. You put a .htaccess file in your main  /var/www/html directory, or you changed the configuration of an existing .htaccess file which is locking up your web site.

  1. Where can I get a FTP program from?

FTP programs are everywhere on the Internet.  WS_FTP is available free for download on our website, click here.  Our FTP tutorials outline how to use the most popular FTP programs. They demonstrate how to use FTP to upload files to hosting accounts. Click here to access our online tutorials.

  1. I get a 503 error when I try publish with WS_FTP, why?

This is a common error with WS_FTP, and usually means that your domain name is not resolving. Try putting the IP address as the HOST NAME.

  1. How do I upload/publish my website files?

There are two main ways that you can publish your HTML pages.  You can either use Microsoft Frontpage if you have developed your Website in Frontpage, or you can use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program.  Our FTP tutorials outline how to use the most popular FTP programs. They demonstrate how to use FTP to upload files to hosting accounts. Click here to access our online tutorials.

FTP / Frontpage

  1. When I publish with FrontPage98, it places the files inside my personal web folder

This has been traced to a problem with the way FrontPage98 searches for the root web and publishes files under certain configurations.

The only solution is to upgrade to FrontPage2000, which will solve the problem completely.

  1. My FTP connection abruptly dropped while I was in the middle of an upload.

This can happen if, while uploading to your account, you approach to within 3-5% of your maximum disk quota. This is initiated by the server as an emergency precautionary measure.

  1. My FTP connection times out.

If your FTP connection timed out without connecting, check your FTP settings to make sure you have specified the correct host or IP address.

  1. How do I get FrontPage Extensions?

When you signed up for your account you were given the option to select FrontPage extensions. If you recently decided to use Frontpage, contact us and have them installed, there is no charge for this service.

  1. Will all the FrontPage extensions work on my account?

Yes, all the standard extensions FrontPage offers will work on your account. You will not be able to use the ASP or Microsoft Access database integration at this time. Although they are now offered as easily integratable languages within the FrontPage program, they are not part of the server extensions and require separate software to work properly.

  1. Why does FrontPage seem to hang, and even time out when establishing a connection?

There are a number of reasons why FrontPage hangs, the most common reason is related to the amount of data in your WWW directory, both in size and number of files/directories. The more files/directories and size of data, the longer it will take FrontPage to log in. Large amounts of data (> 50MB) or a large number of files or directories (> 500) can cause FrontPage to severely hang and even timeout. If there are connectivity problems between your ISP and our servers, then this can also lead to FrontPage hanging or even timing out. When you have these problems we recommend creating a number smaller subwebs to break your web site up so it does not take FrontPage as long to run through its configuration or recalculate links.

  1. Do you support FrontPage98?

Yes, the FrontPage 2000 extensions are backward compatible. Although there are known problems and it is best if you upgrade to MS Front Page 2000

  1. How do I publish with Microsoft FrontPage?

Click here to access our online tutorials.

  1. Why do I get an Internal Server Error when trying to publish to my Website?

There are a number of reasons why this can happen, usually a re-installation of the extensions will solve the problem. Contact us to request a reinstallation of the FrontPage extensions.

  1. Can I use an FTP program to publish my HTML files and access my account?

Yes, you can FTP to your account at any time, using various programs.

  1. I get a Directory Not Empty message when I try to delete a directory using my FTP program

To delete a directory in FTP you must first delete all the files and directories inside the folder you are trying to delete before you will be able to delete the folder itself.

  1. Why can't I view .htaccess and other system files with my FTP software?

.htaccess and other system files are hidden, you need to enable "show hidden files" in your FTP programme so that you can view these files.  In WS_FTP you need to add -la to the "Remote File Mask" this will allow you to see hidden system files. See below:

  1. I get a permission denied message when I try to upload my website using my FTP program

This normally happens when FrontPage extensions are enabled on your site. You can see if FrontPage extensions are enabled by going to your site control panel and selecting 'Site Information'.

If FrontPage extensions are enabled for your site, you can get them disabled by contacting us.

  1. How do I tell if FrontPage extensions are installed on my site?

You can see if FrontPage extensions are enabled by going to your site control panel and selecting 'Site Information'.
