Registration
When a domain name is registered, the "registrant" exclusively contracts the use of the domain name. However, there is no permanent registrant for any domain name. The "registrant" of a domain name is the original administrative contact listed at the time of registration, regardless of whether the administrative contact information has been changed since then. In other words, the registrant of a domain name is the individual whose name and contact information were initially associated with the username and password profile for the domain name. If the administrative contact information has been changed since the original registration, the most recent administrative contact information entered will be visible in the WHOIS record. However, this information may not be that of the actual registrant of the domain name.
You can use your newly registered domain name to set up email or web hosting services with Cheeky Monkey Hosting. However, you are not required to do anything with your domain name - you may purchase a domain name and just have it parked for future use, or to protect it and prevent others from registering it.
A .nz domain name can use only letters, numbers, or dash ("-"). The domain name can be up to 63 characters long. Note, there may be some other specific restrictions on certain domain name types, click here to view the limitations.

Once the Registry announces that your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it can take up to a further 72 hours before it is active. All Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect new site locations. This is called propagation.
When a visitor types your domain name into their Web browser, their request is referred to a nameserver that indicates the physical location (the IP address) of your domain on the Internet. When your site location changes to a new IP address, or when a new domain name is added, nameservers around the world must be notified of the change. This process is referred to as propagation.
Propagation normally requires 48-72 hours. During this period, if you are transferring your domain, some nameservers will refer to the old location of your site and some to the new location. Therefore, a visitor accessing your site may be directed to either the old or new location. If some visitors are still being directed to your old site location after 72 hours have elapsed, you should contact your previous Internet Presence Provider and request them to update their DNS and delete your domain from their servers. Once this has been done, and this change has been completely propagated, the transfer to your new location will be complete.
A DNS (Domain Name Server) is a computer that serves up domain names from a database. It tells the browser what IP address is allocated to a domain name.
Yes, you can have as many domain names as you like pointing to your website. You can achieve this by using our free URL redirection service.
Your domain name will remain yours as long as you continue to pay your registration fees.
Contact Cheeky Monkey Hosting immediately. If you contact us within 24-hours of initial registration, we may be able to cancel the domain name and refund that transaction in full. After this time, it may not be possible for us to cancel the domain name at the Registry or issue refunds.
You should then register the correctly spelt version of your name as a new registration.
It is your responsibility to keep your contact details up to date. Because Cheeky Monkey Hosting uses Email to send communications about your domain name including renewal reminders, it's essential your Email address is correct. Not maintaining a correct Email address can cause your domain name to be cancelled and any Email and/or Website to become inactive if you do not renew your registration.
Please advise us of any change to your details.
The Registrant is more commonly termed as the Name Holder. The Name Holder or Registrant is an identifiable individual (over 18) or a properly constituted organisation listed in the Legal Name Holder field on application for the domain name.
It is extremely important on initial registration that care be taken to ensure that information for the domain name, the Name Holder and the Name Holder's representative contact name is recorded accurately in order for us to deal with the appropriate entity in the future.
You can register domain names through Cheeky Monkey Hosting for periods from one year to ten years. Discounts apply for multi-year registrations. See our Pricing page for details.
A "Registrar" (or "Domain Name Registrar") is an organisation that has control over the granting of domain names.
The 'Registry' is the system backend that is maintained by the operators of the TLD (Top Level Domain). Registrar's write new names to a central registry database, from which the authoritative root (essentially, a table of all domain names) is built. In the case of .nz, InternetNZ through its registry company New Zealand Registry Services runs the registry, and qualified registrars have shared access to it.
A registrant is the person or company who registers a domain name.
This refers to the domain name Server (DNS) computers where the record of your domain name is held. This is needed to register a domain name and we supply primary and secondary DNS using our Cheeky Monkey Hosting domain name Servers for you unless otherwise specified.
WHOIS databases contain nameserver, registrar, and in some cases, full contact information about a domain name. Each registrar must maintain a WHOIS database containing all contact information for the domains they 'host'. A central registry WHOIS database is maintained by the Registry.
.nz domains are released on the morning of the 91st day following their cancellation. The cancellation date is displayed on the whois information for the domain, and the release date will be shown in the search results if you do a lookup on the domain.
The release time is 12.34am, but this may vary according to NZ Registry operational requirements. At present, the registry goes offline between 12.29am and 12.34am.

Yes, domain names will be cancelled automatically if they are not renewed by the renewal date. Canceling a domain name will result in any Email or Website using the domain name to cease operating. Upon cancellation, the domain name is transferred to the cancelled names pool for 90 days.
Domain Names in the cancelled pool can be reinstated by the original Registrant upon payment of the outstanding renewal fee.
After 90 days, cancelled domain names will be returned to the available pool, so others may register them.
