Domain Name Rules

.nz domain names

• Are registered on a first come, first served basis

• Have no special registration conditions, i.e. anyone can register

• Use only letters, numbers, or hyphen ("-")

• Name segments may not begin or end with a hyphen

• Length cannot exceed 63 characters in total (not including extension)

• Must have at least 2 characters

• Domain names are not case sensitive

• domain names cannot include spaces

• Subdomains may not be registered.

.com, ,org, .net domain names

• registered on a first come, first served basis

• Can not include spaces

• Are not case sensitive

.biz domain names

• registered on a first come, first served basis

• restricted to commercial and bona fide business purposes

• Use only letters, numbers, or hyphen ("-")

• Cannot begin or end with a hyphen

• Must have at least 3 characters and less than 63 characters, not including .BIZ

• Can not include spaces

• Are not case sensitive

.mobi domain names

The key differentiator for the .mobi domain is the mobile user experience. This is driven by dotMobi Switch On!™ Guides. The guides contain a mixture of mandatory and recommended best practices for developing mobile content and services.

In order to ensure the quality of the .mobi experience, the dotmobi registry audits all .mobi web sites to check that they are compliant with the mandatory rules and best practices outlined in the Switch On™ guides. If a site is found not to comply, the registrant will be notified and given 60 days to make the site compliant. If the registrant fails to do this, the domain name will be placed on hold. (It will still be registered but will be disconnected from the web site).

Neither Cheeky Monkey Hosting nor our registrar partner have any involvement in this audit process and we have no responsibility for the compliance of any site attached to a .mobi domain registered through us.

.cc domain names

• Registered on a first come, first served basis

• To be used for commercial and personal sites

• Cannot contain all numbers

• Must have at least 3 characters, but less than 47, not including .cc

• Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum

.ws domain names

• To be used for commercial and personal sites

• Registered on a first come, first served basis

• Must have at least four and as many as 63 characters, not including the .ws

• Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum

.tv domain names

• Used for commercial and personal sites

• Registered on a first come, first served basis

• Must have less than 63 characters, not including .tv

• Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum

.us domain names

• To be used by U.S. citizens and residents, U.S. corporations and other U.S. organisations and organisations with a presence within the United States

• Domain names must be longer than 2 characters and cannot exceed 63 characters (this does not include the extension)

• Registration term from 1 year minimum to 10 years maximum

.co domain names

Please note the following domain names are not available for registration:

• Restricted domain names - identified by the Colombian Government that cannot be registered.

• Reserved domain names - that are or will be reserved by the Colombian Government for special uses, or by the Registry for it's own operations.

• Premium domain names - reserved by the Registry for sale by auction or at premium fixed prices.

• Domain names that have been registered in a previous phase of the launch.

• All one and two character domain names - including all combinations of letters and digits.

• The countries and regions mentioned in ISO 3166 as domain names.

.au domain names

• Registered on a first come, first served basis

• Restricted to Australian companies, foreign companies licensed to trade in Australia, and holders of an Australian Registered Trade Mark

• Domain name must exactly match, be an acronym or abbreviation of the registrant’s company or trading name, organisation or association name or trademark; or be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant

• 2 year minimum and maximum registration period

• Can only be renewed during the 90 days before expiry i.e. after 21 months of registration

• Cannot contain hyphens in the third and fourth position (eg. ab--cd.com.au)

• Must have at least 2 characters and less than 63 characters (not including extension)

.jp domain names

• Registered on a first come, first served basis

• To be used for commercial and personal sites

• Must have at least 3 characters, but less than 63, not including .jp

• 1 year minimum and maximum registration period

.uk domain names

• registered on a first come, first served basis

• 2 year minimum registration or renewal period

• intended to be used for both commercial and personal sites

• Use only letters, numbers, or hyphen ("-")

• Cannot begin or end with a hyphen

• Must have at least 3 characters and less than 65 characters, not including .uk

• Can not include spaces

• Are not case sensitive

Rules for Domain Name Transfers

.nz domains

• A .nz domain may not be transferred within 5 days of initial registration.

• Expired .nz domains may be transferred up to 89 days after expiry.

• The expiry date after transfer may not be more than 10 years in the future.

• Proof of ownership/authority to transfer is provided by the UDAI key for the domain.

.com and .net domains

• A .com or .net domain may not be transferred within 60 days of initial registration.

• The Domain must not be locked.

• Expired .com or .net domains may not be transferred.

• The expiry date after transfer may not be more than 10 years in the future.

• Proof of ownership/authority to transfer is established by the registry (and sometimes also the losing registrar) emailing the current registrant.

.org, .biz, .info domains

• A .org, .biz or .info domain may not be transferred within 60 days of initial registration.

• Expired .org, .biz or .info domains may not be transferred.

• The expiry date after transfer may not be more than 10 years in the future.

• Proof of ownership/authority to transfer is provided by the EPP key for the domain.
